Green taxes 'not fair on motorists'
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the Royal Automobile Club Foundation have claimed drivers are being forced to pay a disproportionate amount in green taxes. Company vehicle drivers and car leasing customers could be paying more than their fair share of green taxes, it has been suggested. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Foundation, drivers are contributing a disproportionate amount towards the fight against climate change. They explained the government has produced a shadow price of carbon document that defines the environmental cost of CO2 emissions. However, it pointed out when compared against these figures, motorists are paying many times what they should be through road tax and fuel duty. Stephen Glaister from the RAC Foundation said the government has claimed that all of these charges are environmental in nature. "Yet that means drivers pay many, many times their fair share towards the cost of mitigating climate change and that cannot be right," he stated. In related news, the RAC Foundation recently claimed the government should invest more in road maintenance with the revenue raised from motorists.
